HOW DID YOU FIND US? -YOUR MINI PROFILE
FULL NAME: Samantha Maria Joansen
NICKNAMES: Sam
BIRTHDATE & AGE: September 1st 1990; Twenty
OCCUPATION: Part time student (economics) at Mt Carmine University.
Heiress.
Vervain: Recruitment - identifies and approaches new augments. Training - helps volatile augments learn control of their abilities.
ALIGNMENT: Vervain
RESIDENCE: Geatadun, Jasmine Terrace: Ancestral home of the (Higgins) Joansen family, Geatadun is a large sandstone mansion.THAT SPARKLING REFLECTION
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE: Sam is short, a trait she gets from her mother. Also from her mother’s side of the gene pool come her straight dark hair and porcelain skin. She has always considered this fairness of skin to be a disadvantage. Growing up in Australia is a major hassle when you can’t cope with a bit of sun. Well, alright, a lot of sun.
Her dark locks are kept shoulder length. Sam will admit – albeit only to herself – that even this is really too long. Her hair is high-maintenance, requiring time that she is only grudgingly willing to devote to keep it healthy and knot-free. Headbands are her favourite accessory, whether cloth or plastic, simply because they can keep her hair out of her stormy blue-grey eyes - eyes inherited from her father, Liam.
Her hands are long and elegant. They might be described as piano players’ hands – except that Sam has next to no musical talent. While the sound of her voice won't rupture eardrums, she'll never sing opera. Or pop music, for that matter.
It is very common, when observing Sam’s hands, to notice that the nails are bitten. She is ‘trying’ to break herself of this habit.
For a self-confessed ‘rich kid’, Sam pays astonishingly little attention to fashion. It is not unheard of to spot her wearing clothes that ‘don’t quite gel’.
FACE CLAIM: Ellen PageAND THE HEART BREAKING TRUTH
PERSONALITY: this could include general demeanor, likes/dislikes, strength/weaknesses. Whatever takes your fancy, as long as you know who your character is.
At first glance, Sam seems like a sweet kid. A little childish for her age at times; perhaps a little rich-and-spoilt... but friendly and approachable. She makes friends quickly, and her honest and open nature endears her to many. This is an advantage in her recruitment work with Vervain, and also in navigating around Juniper agents.
Looking deeper, she's a mess. The trauma of her almost-rape was never addressed properly; nor that of watching her father's murder and becoming sole controller of her family estate during her mother's subsequent mental break down. It is a wonder she's still functioning normally. Well, semi-normally...
AUGMENTATION: power broker
Once upon a time, Sam thought she was normal. Then she moved to Primrose Hills.
1. POWER SENSING. These powers involve controlling the part of a human's brain that is concerned with augmentations. At this level, the user can sense whether someone is augmented or not, and what their augmentation is.
She found herself in a new world, filled with people with special abilities.
2. AMPLIFICATION OR NEGATION. Subconsciously or unconsciously (depending on the character's awareness), the user is able to either amplify (including jump-starting a latent power) or negate (plus dampening) another individual's augmentation. This is done without too much control, and sometimes without the broker's knowledge whatsoever.
Powers that began to act strangely around her.
3. POWER CONTROL. Once awareness sets in, the user will be able to develop more control of their ability. Plus, the user is able to both amplify and negate, not just one or the other.
Until she realised she could control them.
4. POWER TRADING. The ability to switch the powers of augments. If in the presence of a pyrokinetic and clairsentient, the Power Controller could give the pyrokinetic clairsentience and the clairsentient the power to control fire.
Yet she still doesn't know all that she is capable of...
FAMILY: Mother: Theresa Higgins-Joansen
Father: Liam Joansen (deceased)
Grandmother: Georgina Gates-Higgins (deceased)
Grandfather: Alfred Higgins (deceased?)
HISTORY:
Once upon a time, there was an ordinary girl named Sam Joansen. She grew up in Australia, the only child of doting parents. Then her American grandmother, Georgina Gates-Higgins, died. Cold as it may seem, it didn't have much of an effect on Sam. She hadn't seen her grandmother since she was four. What did affect Sam was the abrupt move to America her meddlesome grandmother's last will had demanded.
Homesick for Australia and her friends, Sam also found herself beset by the worst headaches she had ever experienced in her life. She had no idea of course, but it was the first sign of her augmentation showing. Her ability to sense other augments, all but useless in Adelaide, Australia, was being overloaded by the multitude of augments living in and around Primrose Hills. Going back to school only made it worse – until, with the help of a few new friends, she realized what her talent was.
Sam was thrilled by the discovery; but even this gleam of hope and joy trailed dark clouds. No sooner had she come into her power, than her father was offered a job at the Juniper Corporation – the very company about which Sam had been warned. For the first time in her life, the open and honest girl was forced to keep a vitally important secret from her beloved parents.
The secret became even more important when Juniper offered Sam a lab job and science scholarship. Only her father’s relaxed and trustful management kept Sam from being caught as an augment – she was able to change her test results, and those of other augments, to appear perfectly normal.
The discovery of the next stage of her ability was marred when Sam was captured by a pair of Juniper agents. They were coming after one of her friends; but Sam was caught along with him. One of the agents threatened Sam with rape and death, and while Liam came to the rescue before anything happened, the experience shook her deeply.
The final blow to the Joansen family was the death of Liam. A rogue teleporter, acting on wrong information, broke into Geatadun to kill Liam. Sam watched her father die... and then the killer was swept away by Juniper agents who had been hunting her.
The most astonishing twist – Paul "Bull" Jefferson, one of the Juniper agents who’d had a hand in Sam’s abduction had stood out by his kindness, helping Sam and Theresa in their time of need.
For a time, Sam was driven by revenge. She withdrew from her friends and family, focusing on developing her augment. Thankfully, her dear friend, and now-boyfriend, Maverick Baxter came to her rescue. He helped her train - and she helped him in return - then helped her to act like a normal person once more. At his encouragement, she has gone back to uni, studying economics to be able to better-manage her estate.
When Vervain approached Sam, she jumped at the chance to help other augments. However, she is finding that the work doesn't meet her expectations. She wants to be more active, to fight Juniper, to fight rogue augments - which runs against Vervain's pacifist tendencies. Sam isn't aware of Thistle's eyes on her, but she is aware of Paul's subtle suggestions that she should work for Juniper again - but in a far more active role this time, one that utilises her unique powers...
